Filthy Greenskins from the Red Eye tribe have invaded the county of Eschen. Ordinarily, it would be Baronness Clara von Diehl’s responsiblity and right to deal with them, but their numbers are simply too great for the standing forces of Eschen. The invaders have sacked some of the thorps in the countryside and slaughter or enslave the peasantry. Baroness von Diehl has petitioned to raise an army, not to repel the invaders, but to grind them into dust. Her request was granted by Mannfred von Carstein with the condition that it be accompanied by one of the von Carsteins. Godric practically leapt at the chance to wet his blade, and has begun to raise an army of his own from the crypts beneath Castle Drakenhof. While the invaders numbers are sizable, this is no WAAAGH!, and so, the Templars of Drakenhof and the Wight Kings will remain behind. All the more opportunity for Godric von Carstein and those he selects to prove their worth.
Amidst this confusion, one of the Master Necromancers of Waldenhof has ‘gone rogue’. Milland Kalarel, from the Midnight Court of Waldenhof, is missing. His last known whereabouts place him in the mist of this chaos in Eschen, near the town of Winterdorf. Godric will be the obvious accompaniment to the von Diehls, but things are never so simple with the von Carsteins. Under the direction of Mitzi von Carstein, a strike force of vampires will enter the county disguised among the forces of Godric. They are to slip out from the main force, track down this rogue Master Necromancer, and either eliminate or retrieve him. While his capture would empower Drakenhof’s already potent Dark Magic, one can never be too careful of the machinations of Visdame Elize von Carstein.
Geheimnisnacht, or the Night of Mysteries, approaches in two weeks. The most ill-omened night of the year, it is one of only two nights, the other being Hexensnacht, in which Morrslieb, the accursed moon of Chaos, is full. Furthermore, it is the night when Morrslieb is closest to the world whilst in its highly elliptical orbit. During this night the Winds of Magic grow strong and mutations appear. The rise of magic enables many daemons to travel to the world of mortals. Evil sorcerers cast their spells while Necromancers and Vampires raise their undead legions. The Chaos cults gather to praise and worship their dark gods while the terrified law-abiding people hide themselves in their homes praying for the arrival of dawn.
Viscount Jakob Stahlberg of Castle Templehof has been plotting against the von Carsteins for decades. While recent missteps over the last two years on his part saw him losing standing and some tribute, was there more to it? Our spies in the Midnight Court of Templehof have been sending less and less information of late. Through informants placed in a trade caravan, rumors have made their way back to us that his first sire, Fremont, leads the court often of late.
The Red Abbey has long been a stronghold of the Blood Dragons within the lands of Sylvania. Pursuant to old treaties, their number there can be no more than 100 strong. We have never been able to place a spy within, as the risk is too great to send one that has the talent, and likely, ties, to the von Carsteins. However, the Red Abbey is more active than the norm of late.
