All good things to those who wait. I am summoned by Mannfred along with Ziegfried to a meeting. In short we are told one thing, unleash hell upon our enemies. We are to ride north with an army to secure our allies and crush those who oppose us. We are also tasked with finding and linking up with Godric. We are given free rein as to how to do this, as long as the ends justify the means. As we are leaving, the Wight King Frideger stops me and says something to me. I smile a knowing smile and say I will handle it. This is how I will compose my poetry, not with pen and paper, but with steel and blood….
The castle is humming with activity. The war machine is in full effect. I am making last-minute preparations when Oliver shows up and asks for a favor. He needs a book, one that is in the possession of one of our necromancers. He tells me the name and I have no idea who the guy is. So we head to the “basement” to find this necro. When we get down there we find the place in a complete state of chaos. Apparently the book worms do not react well to a change in the normal daily chain of events. I call out the Necro’s name as loud as I can and wait semi-patiently. He shows up with a look of angst on his face. When I tell him to give Oliver the book he needs, he seems somewhat relived. I ask Oliver if he needs anything else and he says no. I leave him in the company of the necro and move off. I am taking a small risk here. I know what the books are Oliver wants. I know Drakenhoff wants these books as well. I also know I am going to need Oliver’s help in the near future to secure the things that I need, and the books are a small price to pay for such help.
Ziegfried, Oliver, Dagomar, and myself head north with the army we have raised. Just before heading out, Ziegfried calls us together. He informs us that he has received solid information that Godric is already dead. He says that he also told Glaedwine this information and that he said we must recover the items and equipment Godric was carrying because they belong to Drakenhoff. I am not sure how Ziegfried came across this information, but I have my suspicions. Between the extravagant masks he handed out for the masquerade, the priceless cloak he recently received and is never seen without, and this new information regarding Godric, I believe our young friend is being played by someone very powerful and very devious.
We make haste for Eschen. We must make sure our rear will be protected before we head east. Basically we need to know who Helga stands with. If she is against Drakenhoff, our only option will be to put one of Rosamund’s progeny in her stead. If she is with us, then we need to secure Eschen and move east to track down Godric and eliminate our enemies. Speaking of Rosamunds spawn, we convinced them it would be much wiser to travel north with us in force rather than risk the journey on their own. Obviously seeing that we have their best interest in mind, they agree and travel with us. We make to Eschen without any problem. It seems the powers that be in Eschen have decided to put undead on patrol for all to see. The citizens of the city seemed worried and the ones that have to move about do so with purpose, with their heads down and their eyes on the ground. We are met by Natalie and Ivonette. They are genuinely surprised to see us and thank us for escorting the kin back home. Some harmless inquiries are made by us and they respond as expected. They inform us Helga will see Franz and Drutmund first, after which see will be happy to receive us formally. I can’t put my finger on it, but something about Natalie bothers me. She appears nervous. Perhaps she is hiding something.
We are eventually shown to a Hall where Helga awaits us. She too seems genuinely surprised that we took the time to escort Franz and Drutmund home. She is eager for news and is clearly unaware of any of the recent events that have transpired. We begin to ask some pointed questions. She quickly realizes we are not here for a social visit and that she is in a bad spot. We fill in some of the blanks for her on the events that occurred at the masquerade and she does the same for us in regards to Clara and her actions over the last 6 months or so. At this point, I tell her we are here to secure our allies and eliminate our enemies and I ask which one is she. After thinking for a minute, she asks if we are giving her permission to raise an army. In a not so subtle manner, I tell her we want her to take up arms against Drakenhof’s enemies and support the rightful Ruler of Sylvania. Ziegfried points out that Eschen is going to need a Baroness soon and lets it hang in the air. An accord is reached. Drutmund will travel east with us to find Godric and eliminate Clara. Franz will remain behind with Helga who will raise an army to support Drakenhof’s policies. With our back door secured, we head off to the east to deliver Clara a healthy dose of von Carstein retribution…
